Here is a short rant I just sent to a friend of mine in response to the email he forwarded me from the GOPUSA saying that Obama was loosing ground and if they could just kill this health care thing, his whole presidency would collapse (my friends tend to be more conservative than I am).

****************

The GOPUSA are the same folks who gave us the war in Iraq and collapsed the global financial system. You really think they have your best interests at heart when it comes to health care? My experience has been that when people try to motivate me with fear, it is because they can't find a rational argument that would convice a sand flea. We have two large segments of our population covered by 'socialized medicine': seniors (Medicare) and veterans (VA). Aside from disaster with the VA under Bush (the same GOP), neither group seems too unhappy with their coverage. Other countries actually come here and use these systems as a model for effective health care delivery. Do you think we are sicker and have a lower life expectancy than all the other industrialized nations just because poor folks eat too many cheeseburgers? We do have the right to keep an inferior health care system that makes billions of dollars for some large and powerful organizations but do you think all the millions being spent to fight health care reform is coming from 'true patriots' or is it just coming from organizations that don't want to lose the huge profits they make by giving you second rate health care are twice the cost the rest of the world pays? There are lots of different ways to cut our health care costs in half and end up healthier but you have to realize that means 8% of the GNP (a lot of money) is going to go somewhere else and the folks currently getting it are absolutely terrified at the prospect.

A comment sent to my e-mail by an American friend stating that I'd hit the nail on the head and to keep pounding away prompted me to send her this reply:

Well, did you hear that *our* (in)famous what'shername from Waterdown, who is very vocal about not changing the way things are down there is going to appear before a Republican committee today to tell how she would have lost her life if she'd depended on socialized (Canadian) health services, since she had a brain tumour that she couldn't get treated here.
Trouble is, her medical records got leaked yesterday. She DIDN'T have a brain tumour - she had a benign cyst. She was in no danger of losing her life. If never treated, the cyst could have affected her vision, nothing else. AND she had an appointemnt for treatment in 39 days after diagnosis.
But she ran off to the US for immediate treatment, cost her $97,000.00 US and now she wants our government to reimburse her.

Hi Abraham:

Thanks for commenting . . .

You know, your 'stuff' doesn't even necessarily have to be made in the USA or Canada, but if it's made in India, Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand, Mexico or most of South America the factories will have employment policies far superior to that of China. It's good to reward these countries for bringing their standards forward too.
We just have to go after the manufacturers (like Levi's) that insist on using Chinese factories in order to get their jeans made for literally pennies a pair so their profits are way out of line with anything that is reasonable.

Sad but true...
Right now the only thing on me that was made in the US is my wallet (which is made of hemp that no doubt came from somewhere else).

I can find nothing new about this in the business news or anywhere else.

If any of my readers has any new information, please pass it on.

How Canadian to just shrug it off when someone else plays dirty. I'm not saying that we should do anything radical, just use our wallets to demonstrate that we don't care for that treatment.

Using our wallets is the best way to show our dislike of any business, corporate or political behaviour. You have the power, as Suzuki says - so use it!
